A leak that appears in the rainy season is not a different species of leak. It is the same path — a lap, a fastener, a valley, a parapet — finally given enough water to show itself. What changes by city is how long that test lasts, and whether a quiet month in the middle is a cure or a pause. This note is about timing. It is not a price, and it is not a promise that someone can be on your roof before the next cell of rain.
The figures below come from NiMet’s seasonal outlooks as reported by Punch, TheCable, and Science Nigeria, from the Lagos State environment ministry’s 2024 briefing, and from the World Bank’s Nigeria climate profile. They are forecasts and published descriptions, not a measurement of your gutter.
Three calendars
Lagos is the long test. For 2025, NiMet put 250 to 290 rainy days on the state, in the same group as a few other coastal states, and described the season as likely to run long, with above-normal rainfall in parts of Lagos. The 2024 state briefing expected onset in the first week of April and cessation in the first week of December, and a yearly total of 1,936.2 millimetres against a long-term average of 1,721.48 millimetres. It also said the first half of that season would be the lighter half and the second half normal to above normal. A leak that “started after August” fits that shape. It does not mean the roof was fine. It means the harder test came later.
The little dry season, or August break, was described for 2025 as beginning in late July and lasting about 27 to 40 days in Lagos, a severe break compared with inland states. Owners use that window to open roofs. The window is real and it is not a switch. Storms still occur, and the second half of the season is still ahead. If you strip a slope in August, the temporary cover has to be good enough for September, not merely for a dry Tuesday.
Abuja and the FCT get one wet block. The national climate profile describes the central belt as rainy from about April to September and dry from December to March, with Harmattan in that dry season. NiMet’s 2025 numbers put central rainfall, including parts of the FCT, between 970 and 1,500 millimetres, with above-normal totals in parts of the FCT, onset in April to May, and an end between 7 and 23 November. A leak in Abuja is often the first storm acting on a gutter that spent months full of dust. If the stain appeared on the first serious rain and not during every rain after that, clean the outlet before you buy a new sheet. If it appears in every rain, the path is structural: a lap, a crack in a deck, a flashing.
Ibadan has two peaks. The Meteorological Society paper on the city’s rainfall describes onset near mid-March, an August easing, a second peak, and an end near mid-November in the climatological account, with mean annual rainfall around 1,500 millimetres in the years that paper discusses. The 2025 forecast is a separate layer: 200 to 250 rainy days for Oyo, and an end of season that can run into the late-November to mid-December window, with only a moderate or mild August break in parts of the state. A leak that vanishes in August and returns in October is using the double peak. Repainting the ceiling in September records the pause. It does not close the path.
What to do before the season, city by city
In Lagos, the useful month is the late dry season, roughly January through March, before the April onset the state briefing described. Clear gutters, look at washers, and photograph any red rust on galvanized sheet while the roof is dry enough to see. Humidity does not give you a true desert month — the climate profile’s figure for annual mean relative humidity around Lagos is about 88 percent — so do not expect a rusty washer to look healthier in February. Expect it to be visible.
In Abuja, the same late dry season is when Harmattan dust is the thing you are removing, not the thing you are waiting out. NiMet’s December 2021–January 2022 bulletin describes that wind as cold, dry, and dusty. Lift gutter screens before April. Pour water on a concrete deck and watch whether it reaches the outlet. A deck that ponds in a bucket test will pond in May.
In Ibadan, do the same housekeeping before the March onset, and do it again at the start of the August easing if the first peak revealed a stain. The second peak is not a rumour. The 2012 household survey that found corrugated iron on 69 percent of Ibadan roofs is relevant here because those short sheets have many end laps, and end laps are exactly what a second peak exploits.
If the building is in Abuja, the practical companion is Abuja roof leak repair: say whether this was the first storm after the dusty months or a leak in every rain. The Abuja hub holds the season. The district pages hold the building.
What to do when it is already leaking
Catch water in a bucket only as a way to keep a ceiling board from collapsing. If the board is sagging, get people out of that spot. If water is near a light, cut power at the board if you can reach it dry. Those steps are safety, not repairs.
Do not spread bitumen on a wet sheet. It will not stick, and the next person has to scrape it off to see the hole. Do not punch a random hole in the ceiling. Do take photographs of the stain and of the slope from a safe place, and send them with the quote form. Mark the timing as emergency if water is entering or the sheet is lifting. Mark “the next few weeks” if the stain has dried and you are trying to get ahead of the next peak.
Micheletti Construction reads that request. The August break does not mean a free diary, and the November end-dates above are climate forecasts, not appointment slots. Reach Micheletti Construction on WhatsApp at +234 803 667 9688 if you want to write to them directly. That does not book a visit ahead of the weather.
After the season
When the rain stops, the stain dries and the urgency leaves the household. The path is still there. Lagos roofs that leaked in October will be asked to do it again from the following April, for most of the year. Abuja roofs get a longer dry gap in which to fix the outlet properly. Ibadan roofs get a gap that is shorter than Abuja’s and less complete than a true dry season. Use the gap you actually have. A quote requested in the first dry week is easier to do well than a quote requested the afternoon the ceiling fails.
If you are choosing materials because the season defeated the old sheet, read the comparison of long-span, stone-coated, and corrugated roofs next. If you are not sure the season was the cause, ask for an inspection rather than a product.
